This is an incredible story about a little Siamese fighting fish. The fish’s coloring looks remarkably like the Thai national flag, so the tiny fish was sold for a whopping $1,530!
Despite their relatively small size, Siamese fighting fish are well-known for their extremely territorial behaviour. And they certainly live up to their name. But they’re popular aquarium fish because they’re beautiful, with ornate fins and vibrant colors. Siamese fighting fish are usually one or more colors, such as red and blue.
However, a very special Siamese fighting fish was recently sold in Bangkok for 53,500 baht ($1,530). This fish fetched such an enormous sum because it’s got red, blue and white stripes, just like the Thai national flag. The 40-year-old man who sold the fish, Kachen Worachai, is a convenience store owner who breeds Siamese fighting fish as a hobby. He never thought he’d end up making such an enormous sum from selling one fish!
Pictures of the fish went viral after Kachen posted them on a private Betta fish auction group on Facebook. Kachen had expected someone to purchase the Siamese fighting fish for a few thousand baht (1000 baht = $28) but was surprised when the bid hit 10, 000 baht ($285) on the next day.
“I never expected my fish to go for this price.”
He posted the pictures on Nov. 6 with a starting bid of 99 baht ($2.82) and closed the auction on Nov. 8.
Betta fish have been bred previously to reproduce the colors of the Thai flag but Kachen said none have come close. He said the highest previous price for a Betta was for a half-moon Betta fish that sold for 23,500 baht ($671).
“The chance of getting a fish with the flag’s exact color is like one in 100,000,” said Kachen. “So many people have tried to breed the Thai flag colors. Luck was really on my side.”
